Veteran Chicago cop gunned down in broad daylight
A veteran, off-duty Chicago police officer was gunned down Tuesday afternoon while trying to help with an arrest in the busy downtown district.
Cmdr. Paul Bauer was shot several times by the armed assailant while assisting a tactical team near a state government building at around 2 p.m., police said.
Bauer was off duty at the time and went to help the officers chasing down the suspect. He was rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died.
“It’s a difficult day for us, but we’ll get through it,” police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said outside the hospital.
The suspect was taken into custody, and a gun was recovered at the scene.
